Sociology

Sociology is the study of Society.

The study of human social behavior, especially the study of the origins, organization, institutions, and development of human society. The Department has been providing resources in the form of books, experienced faculty, etc.

A society of thinkers, innovators and leaders who will contribute towards the making of a more just and humane world by equipping our students with a holistic academic foundation and  providing them an insight into the critical intellectual tradition in sociology.
To make available an education of quality and relevance to all, that frees person from social conditioning like caste, class, gender, and other prejudices and contribute to nation building to evolve a New Inclusive Society.

Objectives

  • To Impart a high quality education, supported by research and focused on the needs of the community
  • To inculcate in students life giving values of love, tolerance,understanding and service to community.
  • Cultivate in students a multicultural outlook and create in them an awareness of the diversity and intellectual pluralism in the world today.
  • To foster among students critical communication skills that will enable them to compete in the employment market.

Name: Ms. Venisha Fernandes
Designation: Assistant Professor

Teaching Experience: 8 years

Ms. Venisha Fernandes, was transferred from St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa to Rosary College in February 2021. She is passionate about teaching Sociology. Her areas of interest are gender, Goan culture and society and education.

She has presented papers at National Seminars and at an International Conference. A documentary titled ‘Remembering Kurdi’ (2016), directed by Soumayananda Sahi was inspired by her M.A. Dissertation ‘Remembering the Past: Place and Memory after Displacement’.

Her other interests are composing poems, travelling and reading. Currently she is pursuing PhD from Goa University.

Name: Raisa Cardozo

Ms. Raisa Cardozo joined the Department of Sociology in the year 2019. She has seven years of teaching experience at the undergraduate level. Before joining Rosary College she taught for four years at Parvatibai Chowgule College and two years in M.E.S College. She has presented two papers at National and International Conferences.  She is also an IGNOU Counsellor for M.A in Sociology at Dhempe College.  Her interest areas include Sociology of Tribes, Culture and Rural studies. Presently she is pursuing Ph.D. from Goa University.

Name: Heena Kawsar S. Shabali
Designation: Assistant Professor

Teaching Experience: 02 Years

Ms. Heena Shabali joined the Department of Sociology in 2023. She qualified the SET examination and has two years of teaching experience at the undergraduate level. Prior to joining Rosary College, she taught for one year at Parvatibai Chowgule College and another year at M.E.S College. Additionally, she served as a member of the BOS (Board of Studies) for the Sociology Department at Parvatibai Chowgule College from 2021 to 2022.

She has presented a paper at a National Conference held at Bangalore University. Her areas of interest include Sociology of Religion and Gender studies. Currently, she is pursuing Ph.D. from Goa University.

Elicia Aguiar recently completed her post-graduation in Sociology from Goa University in 2024. A passionate and enthusiastic fresh graduate, eager to develop her skills in the field. Her areas of interest include the Sociology of Culture, Religion, and Goan Society. Elicia is dedicated to exploring and understanding the intricate social dynamics within these areas, aiming to inspire and educate her students through engaging and thought-provoking lessons.
