The Rosary College of Commerce and Arts was established by the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman in the Year 1990, through the initiative of late Rev. Can. Jose Roberto Vaz, the then Parish priest of Our Lady of Rosary Church, Navelim. The establishment of the college came at a crucial juncture in the progress of educational infrastructure in the southern district of Goa, which did not have many options for higher education. Through the hard work and efforts of the management of the college, affiliation was secured from Goa University for the commerce stream in June 1990 and for arts stream in May 1991. The college thus started off with an objective to strengthen the commercial, economic, geographical, social and linguistic landscape of south Goan academia. The locals supported the institution with a fervour and zeal, as the youth of Navelim, as well as its surrounding villages and cities, have been flocking to the portals of the college for the last 3 decades. In the academic year 1990-1991, 36 students were enrolled for the first year commerce programme. In the academic year 1991-1992, 174 students were enrolled for first year commerce and arts, and second year commerce courses. These numbers have grown over the passing years and today the enrollment of students with each new academic year surpasses the hundreds.
The college has strived to keep updated with the latest trends in education and to fulfil this purpose secured permission for the self-financed Bachelor in Computer Applications (B.C.A.), a three-year degree course, in the academic year 1998-1999. To encourage entrepreneurship and practical learning a three-year Bachelor in Business Administration (B.B.A.) degree course was introduced in 2000-2001. As the institution grew it expanded its horizons into higher learning and in the academic year 2008-2009 a post-graduate degree course in commerce was announced. In 2011-2012, Rosary College applied for a course in Bachelor in Business Administration with a specialization in Travel and Tourism (B.B.A. T&T) which has trained students for over a decade in hospitality and service, a key field in the tourist haven of Goa. The institution also conducts career oriented certificate courses in addition to a well-established, university approved curriculum. As a testament to its efforts in quality education, the college has been accredited by NAAC with Grade A (CGPA of 3.21 on a 4 point scale) in 2022 during its 4th cycle of accreditation. With a diverse array of departments gracing its campus Rosary College still continues to educate and inspire the local community, offering multiple courses with a focus on building an active citizenry. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has been enthusiastically implemented by the college as it is currently concentrating on applying learner-centric syllabi and teaching methods with an emphasis on infrastructural upgradation.
Set amid abundant sylvan surroundings, about 4 kilometres from the commercial capital of Goa – Margao – the campus provides an ambience that stimulates intellectual thinking and academic striving. It is accessible by a well established public transport system. Places of convenience like girls’ hostels, supermarkets, pharmacies, hospitals, banks, places of worship and the Margao railway station are in the close vicinity of the college.
The facilities on the campus include well lit and spacious classrooms, fitted with multi-media and audio-visual equipment, state-of-the-art computer laboratories, campus wide Wi-Fi connectivity, an extensive library, easily accessibile sports facilities, an established placement network and a spacious cafeteria. The well-qualified staff and well-designed infrastructure is conducive to learning and enhances the intellectual curiosity of students. Students who study at Rosary College are transformed into well-adjusted, hard-working and responsible adults who work towards the continual development of their surroundings and the community.

Significance of the Emblem

This is an adaptation of an ancient symbol prevailing in India. This symbol reached Sri Lanka (2nd – 3rd Century), Chansen and Dvaravati in Thailand and OC EO in Ancient Cambodia. According to Robert S. Wicks (1999) independent waves of Indian influence presumably penetrated Southeast Asia at different rates and were absorbed unevenly from one region to another. Indian elements were selected, absorbed and altered accordingly to the needs and beliefs of local inhabitants.
This is an ever-flowing vase with two budding tendrils known as Vase of plenty (Purnagatha). The purnaghata motif has a long history in Indian art. The purnaghata is an emblem of fruitfulness and plenty. The tendrils represent growth. This symbol has been adapted from a 6th – 7th century silver medal (presently displayed at National Museum, Bangkok) discovered in a reliquary deposit found beneath of ruins of a chedi (stupa) at Nakhorn Pathom in 1943, known earlier as Dvaravati which is situated in the central part of present day Thailand. The same symbol has been also found on coins, toilet trays and ivory combs. In order to make a medal or coin a small bead of pre-weighed silver was pounded flat and it was placed between dies and stamped.
The Latin quotation “UT VITAM HABEANT ET ABUNDANTIUS HABEANT” is from John 10, 10 (They may have life and have it to the full). Rosary College is an ever-flowing vase of plenty, offering an educative environment to its students, staff and faculty. It offers an integral education far from the myopic goal of obtaining a mere degree. Its constituents should grow, bloom and blossom taking advantage of the abundance that is offered and live their lives to the full. The curvature of the circle has been kept intact as in the original medal to indicate our journey towards perfection.
